FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
Diamond FAQ
You will not. You need to be an expert and use specialized equipment to make sure a diamond is real. You must always buy a diamond that is accompanied with an authentic independent laboratory certificate and not one that is issued by the jeweller; you will know it is real and if it is treated artificially or not. An understanding of the four Cs is required to be able to read diamond quality.
*WE deliver every solitaire diamond with a laser encrypted GIA Certificate and diamond jewellery from independent reputed diamond laboratories from around the world. We believe in quality, service and satisfaction to the customers.
The four C’s are Carat (weight), Color, Clarity and Cut of the stone.
1. Carat: The weight of the stone, referred to in points in case of small stones.
- 1 carat is 1/5 of a gram or 200 milligrams.
- There are 100 points to a carat.
- A 75 point stone is .75 carat.
“Carats” represent the weight and not the physical size of the stone. Example, 1 carat diamond is physically larger than a 1 carat ruby since ruby is denser than diamond.
2. Color: Color is usually undesirable in diamonds. Typically ratings will be alphabetical with the earlier letters of the alphabet having less color. AGS has a similar 0-10 scale.
- D, E and F – “Colorless”
- G, H, I & J – “near colorless”
- K, L and M – faint yellow or “top silver”
- N to Z – very light or “light yellow”
- Z+ – grades are considered “fancy yellow”
Most stones you will find will be in the E-F to the J-K range.
3. Clarity: You will typically find ratings such as this:
GIA | AGS | CLARITY |
---|---|---|
FL | 0 | Flawless |
IF | 1 | Internally Flawless |
VVS1 | 1 | Very, Very slightly included |
VVS2 | 2 | VVS1 to a less perfect degree |
VS1 | 3 | Very slightly included |
VS2 | 4 | VS1 to a less perfect degree |
SI1 | 5 | Slightly included |
SI2 | 6 | SI1 to a less perfect degree |
I1 | 7-8 | Included |
I2 | 8-9 | I1 to a less perfect degree |
I3 | 9-10 | Severely Included |
Color- The most desirable color of the diamond is white. The Color scale ranges from D to Z, where D is the whitest of the white and hence most expensive. However, colors between E to H are regarded as very white, and you cannot make out the difference in color once a diamond is set.
However, diamond color becomes more obvious as in larger size diamonds, or in shapes other than the round brilliant. For instance, the Asscher and the emerald cuts are more see-through with large facets, and require a higher color and clarity than other shapes. Color is something that can be discerned with the naked eye with practice (such as looking at the engagement ring everyday. Hence, it is advisable to buy as white a diamond as you can afford in your carat range, in an eye clean or better clarity. If a diamond has slight blue fluorescence, it could render your H or J color whiter. Also, if the stone is very well cut, it makes both the clarity and color look better.
Clarity is not a factor you can judge only by looking at the diamond under magnification. Step cut diamond shapes like emerald and Asscher cuts require a higher quality of color and clarity as they have large see-through facets, which make it easy to see any imperfections.
The best shape of diamond for a ring depends on:
- Personal preference
- Desired brilliance (round brilliant cut has the most)
- Weight (Fancies look more elegant in large sizes).
- How big you want it to look (Fancies tend to look larger than white diamonds) .
- Shape and size of hand (experiment to find what is most flattering).
- Color and clarity of diamond (round brilliant cut hides defects and yellow tints best).
Cubic Zirconia stones are a man-made diamond simulants with optical characteristics very close to natural diamonds. On the mohs scale of 1-10 for hardness, a CZ is 8.5 – 8.9, while a diamond is 10. Sand or dirt will not scratch a CZ or a diamond, but CZs and diamonds will both scratch glass. A CZ weighs more than a diamond, and this is a principal way to tell them apart. Because of its low cost, durability, and close visual likeness to diamond, synthetic cubic zirconia is considered as one of its competitor.
All solitaire diamond rings, pendants and stud earrings sold on Carats Jewellers are accompanied by their original and unique diamond certificate. Jewelry in our ‘Dazzling Diamond Jewellery Collection’ is accompanied by a grading certificate from accredited diamond labs. A certification is generated either by GIA or any other accredited lab that clearly states on the diamond quality and related details. We do, of course, assure that all our diamonds are real, natural and “conflict-free”.
Certificates are laser encrypted on GIA (The Gemological Institute of America) certified stones, and the certificate number is engraved on the solitaire, which clearly shows a link between the item being certified.
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is the world’s most respected gemological laboratory, entrusted with grading and identifying more gems than any other lab including the Hope, the Taylor-Burton, the De Beers Millennium Star, and the Incomparable. Located in major gem and jewelry centres around the world, GIA laboratories are staffed by expert diamond graders and gemologists, whose work sets the standard for grading practices worldwide.

White gold and platinum have their own properties, which make them unique. 18k white gold is made by mixing 75% gold with 25% other metals such as silver and palladium. When white gold rings are new they are coated with another white metal called Rhodium. Rhodium is a metal very similar to platinum and Rhodium shares many of the properties of platinum including its white color. Platinum is a white metal, but unlike gold it is used in jewelry in almost its pure form (approximately 95% pure). Platinum is extremely long wearing and is very white, so it does not need to be Rhodium plated like white gold.
Platinum is very dense (heavy), so a platinum ring will feel heavier than an 18k gold ring. The major criteria of selection is the price point as platinum’s cost is double the price of a gold band.
Gold & Jewellery Collection FAQ
Gold Prices are constantly fluctuating and therefore the current gold price is a major criterion in calculating the price of an item. Other factors include making charges, manufacturing wastage, applicable import custom duties and government taxes. Hence the prices on Carats Jewellers are subject to change everyday.
The stones used in the gold jewellery are sold by the carats, (carat is the measure to weigh the weight of stones) 1 carat is equal to about 1/5 of a gram in weight, so 1 gram of stones would equal 5 times the price of the gold. Additionally, the time and labour required to set the stones individually, and sorting of similar colour/shade and size in the stones, also adds to the price of the finished stone jewellery product.

Pure 24 karat gold is yellow in colour, when the purity is lowered, by adding different alloys, the colour of the gold can be changed to reflect the colour of the alloy. i.e. if we were to convert 24k gold to 22k gold we would be adding about 8.4% alloy, which would now make it 91.6 percent pure (22 karat).
